Hydrants

A working fire needs water, and finding it should not involve driving in circles. The Live Map has a hydrant layer: turn it on with the hydrant button in the map controls, and it stays on the next time you open the map.

How it works

When you open the Live Map, it centres on your live position from the game, once. After that you pan and zoom as usual, with the hydrants marked around you.

Two things worth knowing:

  • The centring needs you to be on duty and in the game. A browser open on a second machine has no position to centre on, and starts from the overview.
  • The map shows every hydrant, not only the nearest to you. On a call where the engine is parked away from the fire, look around the fire rather than around yourself.

Using it on a scene

Check the map while responding rather than after arriving. Knowing there is a hydrant behind you before you commit to a position beats discovering it once the line is already laid.

Call the hydrant location over the radio the same way you would call any other location: the postal, then the street. Everyone else is on the map and can find it from that.

If it is empty

Hydrants are placed by your community. An empty layer means none have been configured for that area, not that there is no water. Ask your community's staff rather than assuming the block is dry.
