Phone System

Whether your community has phone numbers at all, and where they come from.

Two modes

LUX's own phone system. The CAD generates and owns the numbers. Everything works everywhere: the directory, and calling from the browser as well as in-game.

An external phone resource. Your community already runs its own phone script, and the CAD syncs numbers from it rather than inventing its own.

The trade-off is the one thing to understand before choosing:

LUX phoneExternal resource
Directory lookupyesyes
Calling from the browseryesno — in-game only
Numbers are per characteryesper player

In external mode the voice goes through that resource, so a dispatcher sitting in a browser cannot originate a call — the CALL button is disabled there and says so. And because the external resource issues one number per player, two characters belonging to the same person show the same number. Neither is a bug; both follow from where the numbers come from.

Number format

In LUX mode you set the shape of generated numbers — the prefix and the length. Pick something that matches how your community writes numbers in-game, because it ends up on ID cards and in the directory.

Sync status

In external mode the page shows how many numbers are synced, how many are awaiting a player, and when the last sync ran. Awaiting a player is normal: a number exists in the phone resource but nobody has linked it to a character yet.

Linking a number

Players link their own numbers, and only from in-game: they open the CAD while holding the phone they want to use and confirm it. The CAD never assigns a number automatically, even when there is only one candidate — a phone can belong to a character its owner deliberately does not want listed.

Players can also hide their number from the directory. Hidden means not listed, not unreachable: anyone who already knows the number can still call it, which is the point for roleplay.

See Phone Directory.

Turning it off

With the phone disabled the directory shows a Phone system disabled label and no call buttons. Nothing else breaks — 911 is a separate system and keeps working either way.
